We are 9 games into the NBA regular season and the Lakers have won 5 of the 9. A lot of their surprising success has come from the stellar play from their bench unit. While the Lakers starting unit has been productive it is the non-stop improvement from Larry Nance Jr., Jordan Clakrson, Lou Williams, Tarik Black, and Brandon Ingram that continue to impress.
The Lakers bench leads the NBA in bench scoring, averaging 48.8 points per game. Coach Luke Walton has been preaching that the unselfishness of the players has allowed everyone to thrive. Also noting that it is easy for players to want to just put points up for personal satisfaction rather than playing for the team. Players such as Clarkson recently stated that “he is willing to run through a brick wall for Walton”, showing the respect and appreciation for the first-year head coach. Moreover, Coach Luke Walton has endless praise for the bench unit and said, “we hope that they take pride and build their own identity. What they are doing right now is special right now.”
Throughout this young season the starting unit has not been in rhythm and capable of putting points up consistently. However, this bench squad always comes in the game with energy and gives this young team a boost! Lakers will need to continue this success with some tough road games coming up. Do you think they can?
